Why Your Upwork Proposals Are Not Even Being Viewed
One of the most common questions we hear from freelancers goes like this: "I sent dozens of proposals, spent all my Connects, and only two were ever viewed. What am I doing wrong?" The uncomfortable answer is that part of it is not about you at all. A lot of job posts never lead to a hire. The client posts, gets 50 proposals in an hour, feels overwhelmed, and disappears. Before you spend Connects, look at the client history: hire rate, total spend, and reviews from freelancers. If a client has 40 posted jobs and 2 hires, your proposal was probably never going to be read.
When the job is real, two things decide if you get viewed: where you sit in the list and what your first two lines say. Boosted proposals sit on top, so everyone below is fighting for a skim. The client sees only the first sentence or two in the preview. If that sentence is about you ("I am a full stack developer with 8 years of experience"), most clients scroll past. If it is about their problem, they click.
A related question worth asking: "Is this a normal conversion rate?" Do not measure yourself on proposals sent. Measure viewed rate and reply rate separately. If nothing gets viewed, you have a targeting and timing problem. If proposals get viewed but nobody replies, you have a writing problem. Those are different fixes, and knowing which one you have saves a lot of Connects. And no, Upwork does not refund Connects just because your proposal was not viewed. Refunds only happen when a job is cancelled or removed.
This problem is actually why we built our proposal reviewer. We interviewed real freelancers, including top earners, and collected their actual winning and losing proposals. Then we analyzed what separates the two. Running your draft against that data before you spend Connects tells you if your first two lines pull their weight. And if you want the fundamentals first, start with our guide to writing better job proposals.
